hallway bathroom: flooring progress

Well, after almost a full year of procrastination, I went from this:

This is the first thing I’ve actually finished in the bathroom remodel and I couldn’t be more thrilled. It wasn’t at all easy - the large hex tile was somewhat tricky to install. It was difficult to get the spacing just right, which led to the tiles shifting as I installed them. I had to pull up about 6 tiles to reset them, but I got everything mortared and installed yesterday.

Today was all about the grout. I chose a pre-mixed sanded grout in bright white. I was pleasantly surprised at how little grout it actually took to do the whole floor. My only real complaint was that the pre-mixed grout was a drier consistency than I’m used to. As a result, it felt like it dried on the surface of the tiles faster than I expected.

The picture above is after grouting and three rounds of wiping down the tiles with a damp sponge. There is still some grit, but nothing that can’t be solved with another round of cleaning tomorrow. But for now, I’m just enjoying having completed a step towards finishing off the bathroom remodel.
